Soon after throwing away the colonial yoke on August 15, 1947, India focussed her attention on bringing about rapid economic development of the country. The path of ‘economic planning’ based on ‘mixed economic pattern’ was accepted as an ‘essay in faith’ and a ‘venture of spirit* to establish a ‘socialistic pattern of society’. Consequently, she had to obtain external economic and technical assistance from socialist as well as capitalist countries both as a supplement to and an incentive for maximum national effort and the Soviet Union has been an important donor. The first Indo-Soviet economic co-operation agreement was signed on February 2, 1955, just 14 months after the signing of the first bilateral trade agreement and the relationship has strengthened, since then even thought here has been considerable criticism of this relationship both inside India and abroad.
Only last year, the country celebrated 40th anniversary of her Independence. This may be a fraction of time in a nation’s march to history. But, in the context of building up a newly liberated, poverty-ridden and economically stagnant nation and at the same time, in reviewing the Indo-Soviet economic, technical and trade relationship, it is an useful reference period for evaluation.
With this end in view, this work attempts to make a thorough analysis of Soviet co-operation and assistance to India in the field of energy, industry, agriculture, science and technology as well as in infrastructural development and makes a comprehensive survey of Indo-Soviet trade relations and aims at projecting to the readers not only its entire gamut but also its impact on India’s economic development.
